The activities and responsibilities of the oversight committees reflect the organizational perspective of RTOG operations. The Steering Committee is charged with a leadership role with regard to RTOG activities, governance, scientific strategies, and agenda. This involves determining policy and resolving policy-related problems, creating and disbanding committees, and making final decisions about proceeding with received recommendations.

The Data and Safety Monitoring Committee performs an objective oversight function, based on their lack of conflict of interest or involvement with RTOG research studies.
