Anthony M. Magliocco, MD, Named New RTOG Pathology Committee Chair
Philadelphia, PA - January 12, 2009 - Anthony M. Magliocco, M.D. has been appointed Pathology Committee Chair for the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG). Dr. Magliocco is the director of the Translational Laboratory at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Alberta, Canada and an associate professor in the department of Oncology, Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the University of Calgary. RTOG is a National Cancer Institute-funded national clinical trials group and is administered by the American College of Radiology.
"Dr. Magliocco is an internationally respected molecular pathologist with a strong clinical and research background. He has been actively involved in RTOG research for a number of years. The translational group in Calgary has become a center of excellence for protein expression using the HistoRx/Aqua technology and Dr. Magliocco is currently directing studies aimed at identifying novel molecular markers of tumor response to therapies in several different cancers, including breast cancer and gynecological malignancies," said Walter J. Curran, Jr., M.D., the RTOG Group Chair, and the Lawrence W. Davis Professor and Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology in the Emory School of Medicine and Chief Medical Officer of the Emory Winship Cancer Institute.
"RTOG offers unique opportunities for pathologists, with its extensive biospecimen holdings, and large number of studies with integral pathology components, it is exciting to lead this effort and help direct RTOG's research efforts," said Dr. Magliocco.
As the RTOG Pathology Committee chair, Dr. Magliocco will serve on the RTOG Executive Committee and work closely with RTOG translational research program investigators, disease site committee chairs, and his fellow pathologists to review the group's research protocols, assess the necessity of central pathology review, provide technical support for translational research projects and together with the RTOG Biospecimen Repository provide guidance on the tumor banking activities of the group.
Dr. Magliocco succeeds Mahul B. Amin, M.D., of Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles as RTOG Pathology Committee chair. According to Dr. Curran, "We are very appreciative for Dr. Amin's leadership of our pathology research for the last seven years. We are fortunate that Dr. Amin will continue as an active member of our Pathology Committee."
